Merlin was a Magician whose help was needed to raise the young Arthur. Merlin brought Arthur to another castle where he was raised. One of the best-known tales about Merlin is the one with the sword in a rock. A lot of knights have tried to get the sword out of the rock. Merlin put the sword in there. He said that the one who could get the sword out, would be the new king of England.

 

When Arthur needed to get the sword for his adoptive brother, and got it out at once, he was then known as the new king of England. Later, Merlin guided Arthur to receive the sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake.
