Sir Balin was a prisoner of King Arthur for over half a year. When he was released his destiny was sealed by the arrival of a mysterious woman bearing a sword that only the most brave knight in King Arthur's court will be able to draw. He drew the sword and eventually joined the Knights of the Round Table. He is often referred to as the Knight with the Two Swords. But, by keeping two swords, the mysterious woman made a prophecy that he will kill the man he cares about most and bring about his own destruction. He ignores the warning and the fate of his brother and himself is sealed, as he couldn't recognise his brother in battle, thus killing him.
He was also an important character in the quest for the holy grail alongside Galahad and Percival.
